1. the action of conserving; preservation; protecting from loss or from being used up; avoidance of waste: »

the laws of conservation in physics. The conservation of our mineral resources is important because they can never be replenished.

2. the official protection and care of forests, rivers, and other natural resources: »

In recent years, however, the protection and wise use of our natural resources has become so important that the national and state governments spend millions of dollars each year on conservation (Beauchamp, Mayfield, and West).

3. a forest or other area of natural resource, or a part of it, under public or private protection and care.
Usage Conservation, def. 2, is currently used to mean (1) the complete protection or preservation of wilderness and wildlife, (2) the wise or prudent use of all natural resources, or (3) the careful management of the whole environment, including such factors as waste disposal and urban renewal. These usages are not clearly distinguished and tend to overlap.
